Tanzanian Pres. Wins New Term

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) RABAT, Nov 1 (KUNA) -- The Tanzanian Electoral Commission announced Saturday that President Samia Suluhu Hassan has won a new term after securing 97.66 percent of the votes in last week's presidential election.
The commission said in a statement on TV that the oath ceremony will take place later today in the capital, Dar es Salaam.
The announcement of President Hassan's victory comes amid political and security tension that has gripped the country in recent days, as widespread protests erupted after the vote.
The main opposition party said yesterday that "hundreds of people" were killed during the demonstrations, while the government denied the figures.
In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of the UK, Canada, and Norway called on the Tanzanian authorities to respect the right to peaceful assembly and exercise restraint. UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres also urged an investigation into allegations of excessive use of force against protesters. (end)
