Corruption Is Fought Head-On, Not With More Laws Says Panama President Mulino -

(MENAFN- Newsroom Panama) The President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, reacted this Thursday to the rejection in the National Assembly of the anti-corruption bills presented by the Attorney General of the Nation, Luis Gómez Rudy. During a public statement, Mulino expressed that, in his opinion, the country does not need more laws to combat corruption, but rather it needs to confront it with determination and in an effective manner. “In this country, corruption doesn't need more laws, it must be truly fought, with integrity and head-on... with the laws we have, there is more than enough to solve these problems in the country,” the president stated. Mulino also commented that both the Attorney General's Office and the Assembly have clear roles and responsibilities as stipulated in the Constitution of Panama.

“The Attorney General is the Attorney General and the Assembly is the Assembly; both respond to different situations regulated in our Constitution. For some reason, it doesn't happen, but that's not our problem in the Executive branch,” the president stated, emphasizing that the Executive branch has no direct influence over legislative decisions. The president lamented that, despite having an adequate legal framework, the application of anti-corruption laws is not always effective.“The current legal framework is sufficient to address acts of corruption, but it is not always applied as it should be,” he concluded. These statements come after the Government Commission of the National Assembly decided to reject the bills promoted by Attorney General Luis Gómez Rudy, which aimed to strengthen the fight against corruption in the country.
