(MENAFN) On Sunday, the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that one of its patrols came under grenade fire from an Israeli drone and tank fire near the village of Kfar Kila, located in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli assaults “are in violation of Security Council Resolution 1701 and Lebanon’s sovereignty, and show disregard for safety and security of the peacekeepers implementing Security Council-mandated tasks in southern Lebanon,” stated UNIFIL in a formal announcement.

Thankfully, no injuries or damages were reported as a result of the attack.

Additionally, UNIFIL mentioned that an Israeli drone flew over one of its patrols in the same region, forcing peacekeepers to take defensive actions in order to neutralize the aerial threat.

Since 1978, UNIFIL has been stationed in southern Lebanon, with a significant reinforcement of its forces following UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which was passed after the 2006 conflict between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Despite the ceasefire agreement that came into effect in November 2024, Israel has frequently carried out airstrikes in Lebanon, claiming they were aimed at Hezbollah's infrastructure.
Under the terms of the truce, the Israeli military was expected to withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 2025.

However, Israel has only partially pulled back its forces and continues to maintain a military presence at five border outposts.
