Kremlin Discusses Preparations for Putin-Trump Summit

(MENAFN) The Kremlin stated on Sunday that any potential summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump would require “a great deal of homework.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in an interview, emphasized that the two leaders cannot simply “meet for the sake of meeting.”

He explained that the groundwork for such a summit is essential, which is why the task of preparing the discussions was delegated to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“The process is complex. A great deal of homework truly needs to be done before the foundation for such a new summit can be laid,” Peskov remarked.

This highlights the importance of thorough preparation for any future meeting between the two leaders.

Earlier this week, President Trump announced that he had called off an upcoming summit with President Putin in Budapest, explaining that “it didn’t feel right” to him.

He also voiced frustration over the lack of progress in talks aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt later clarified that the meeting was "not completely off the table," indicating that it could still be rescheduled, but only with a clear goal of achieving a “tangible positive outcome.”

While in Malaysia for the 47th ASEAN summit on Saturday, President Trump stated that he would only consider rescheduling the meeting with Putin if there were concrete assurances that a deal could be reached to end the more than three-and-a-half-year-long war.

Peskov, however, noted that referring to the Budapest meeting as “canceled” was inaccurate, as no specific date for the summit had been agreed upon.
