Trump Predicts Peaceful Coexistence Between India, Pakistan

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump confidently asserted that Pakistan and India are “going to live very nicely together,” during a key diplomatic event on Monday. The remarks came at the signing ceremony endorsing the ceasefire in Gaza, held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

“India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top and he's just done a fantastic job. I think Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together,” Trump said.

Standing behind the US president, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Trump’s peace efforts, dubbing him a “man of peace” and acknowledging his role in resolving conflicts worldwide.

“Today again I want to nominate the great president for the Nobel Peace Prize because he has not only brought peace in South Asia but saved millions of lives,” Sharif declared. “I would like to salute you for your exemplary leadership and I think the world will remember you as the man who went out of his way and stopped eight wars.”

The tense backdrop to these comments includes a deadly terrorist attack in India’s Jammu and Kashmir region in April, which killed 26 civilians. India retaliated with strikes in Pakistan, sparking a brief but intense conflict between the two neighboring countries before a ceasefire was agreed.

Ahead of New Delhi’s official announcement ending hostilities, Trump claimed on social media that a deal had been brokered following a “long night of talks” mediated by the United States—a statement repeatedly denied by Indian authorities.

Trump also stated he threatened to impose tariffs on both nations to pressure them into halting their military engagement, a claim similarly refuted by the Indian government.

Nonetheless, several US officials have echoed Trump’s assertions that trade incentives played a role in ending the fighting. In May, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told the US Court of International Trade that the India-Pakistan ceasefire “was only achieved after President Trump interceded and offered both nations trading access with the United States to avert a full-scale war.”
