UNRWA Demands Ceasefire to End Two Years of Genocide in Gaza
(MENAFN) The UN's agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, urgently demanded an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, marking two years of ongoing genocidal war in the region.
“Two years of war in Gaza. Two years too long,” UNRWA stated in a message shared on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
The agency emphasized the critical need for the release of both Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees, alongside the removal of the Israeli blockade. UNRWA called for the establishment of a "standard flow of humanitarian aid and commercial supplies" under a United Nations mechanism to alleviate the suffering.
“It’s time for a ceasefire now,” UNRWA concluded.
Since the start of the conflict on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military has claimed the lives of over 67,100 Palestinians, the majority of whom have been women and children. The continued airstrikes have rendered Gaza nearly uninhabitable, resulting in widespread displacement, famine, and outbreaks of disease.
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations began indirect peace talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt on Monday, where they are set to review former US President Donald Trump’s 20-point proposal. The plan outlines the release of Israeli captives within 72 hours of Israeli approval, a ceasefire agreement, and the disarmament of Hamas.
