(MENAFN) More than 1,200 families have been forced from their homes in Sudan’s Bahri city, located in Khartoum state, following intense flooding, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed in a statement on Sunday.

The UN agency reported that while five homes were completely destroyed, most other residences sustained partial structural damage.

In its update, the IOM said that “many other families left the area in anticipation of possible flood damage,” adding that the displaced are now taking refuge within nearby host communities.

Flooding has surged across multiple regions in Sudan in recent weeks, driven by swelling levels of the Nile River and its two main tributaries — the White Nile, which begins in Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile, flowing from the Ethiopian highlands.

According to Sudanese government figures, more than 125,000 people have been impacted by torrential rains and rising waters since June 30.

The country’s rainy season, stretching from June to October, frequently brings severe weather that triggers widespread annual flooding.

This year's floods come as Sudan remains engulfed in a violent conflict between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a war that erupted in April 2023, leaving thousands dead and millions displaced.
