Lee Jae Myung Urges UN Support in Korean Peninsula Peace Effort

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has appealed to the United Nations for backing on a Korean Peninsula dialogue plan aimed at achieving North Korea’s denuclearization through negotiations, his office reported Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Lee conferred with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, presenting a dialogue framework centered on "exchange … normalization and denuclearization."

The initiative seeks to end decades of confrontation and foster a new phase of peace across the Korean Peninsula, according to a news agency.

"President Lee said that peace and security on the Korean Peninsula are directly linked to global peace and security, and requested the U.N.'s support in moving beyond conflict and confrontation toward dialogue and cooperation," his office emphasized in a release.

The UN leader welcomed the proposal as a “wise approach” and vowed the global body’s active assistance, also committing to enhance collaboration with Seoul.

Earlier Tuesday, in his speech to the UN General Assembly, Lee admitted that achieving denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula would not be feasible in the immediate future.

He stressed, however, that Seoul is determined to break the "vicious cycle" of animosity with Pyongyang and reduce inter-Korean military friction.

For its part, Pyongyang has insisted that any future discussions with the international community would only be possible if North Korea is formally recognized as a nuclear-armed state.

The peninsula has remained divided since the Korean War of the 1950s, which concluded with an armistice rather than a peace treaty—leaving the two Koreas technically still at war.
