Smartest Move For Ukraine To Strike Russia's Rear, French General Says
“I think the Ukrainians have chosen a good strategy. You are holding the enemy. They will never be in Kyiv, nor even in Pokrovsk, by December. Instead, you now have the ability to destroy targets deep inside [Russian] territory - whether it's communications, command posts, and especially oil refineries. Destroying pipelines, striking railways - this all hits Russia's ability to wage war.”
He added that this is“the smartest decision Ukraine can make at this moment.”
On Ukraine's defensive tactics, the expert praised its military as a world champion in“flexible defense.”
“I would compare it a bit to the French in World War I. It means being able to fall back while inflicting maximum losses on the enemy, and at the right moment launching counterattacks that neutralize the opponent,” Richoux said.
He assessed that autumn and the coming winter are unlikely to bring large-scale offensives, with frontlines expected to remain largely unchanged until year's end.
“That's why 2025, in my view, will remain a transitional year militarily. This is a war of attrition - sometimes called a war of exhaustion - and it will go on. I have always maintained that the Russians are incapable of a breakthrough. That requires an army able to breach defenses, avoid exhaustion, and develop success - Russia doesn't have that. On the other hand, unfortunately, Ukraine also lacks the resources for a breakthrough. That requires a very large army with ample shells, missiles, tanks, and so on,” he explained.
