ALEXANDRIA, Sept 3 (KUNA) -- In the heart of the coastal city of Alexandria, established by the famous Alexander the Great, the Graeco-Roman Museum stands proudly as one of the oldest and most distinguished museums dedicated to classical civilization worldwide.
This remarkable museum is regarded as one of Egypt's largest and most historic institutions in its field, having first opened its doors in 1892 during Khedive Abbas Helmy II's reign, designed by German and Italian architects.
The museum preserves an extensive collection of artifacts and antiquities from the Greek and Roman periods, reflecting the time when Alexandria served not only as Egypt's capital but also as a flourishing center of learning.
Among its most celebrated treasures are marble statues representing historical figures and Roman emperors, complemented by inscriptions, stone sarcophagi, amulets, pottery, and ancient medical tools. (end)
