WASHINGTON, Sept 2 (KUNA) -- Governor of Illinois J.B. Pritzker contested President Donald Trump's plans to send federal troops to the city of Chicago, the third-largest city in the US.
Pritzker told a press conference that the plan was an "invasion" by the Trump administration, adding that he did not contact the administration regarding the deployment of federal troops to Chicago.
CNN, citing officials preferred not to be named, indicated that the campaign against immigrants in Chicago might begin this Friday with the participation of the National Guard and United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told CBS News that her department would provide all resources necessary to implement immigration laws in Chicago, not ruling out similar steps other areas in the State of Illinois.
Brandon Johnson, Chicago's Mayor, signed an executive order Saturday banning the Chicago Police Department (CPD) from assisting to federal troops.
The Mayor told the press that the city did not ask for the deployment of such troops into the streets of Chicago.
In a Truth Social post, Trump called Pritzker a "weak and pathetic Governor" who "just said that he doesn't need help in preventing CRIME. He is CRAZY!!! He better straighten it out, FAST, or we're coming!"
Trump had been very critical of the city of Chicago, telling the press last week that Chicago would be the next "destination" for security efforts to crack down on illegal immigration and crime. (end)
