Amman, Sept. 1 (Petra) – The Ministry of Water and Irrigation held a working session on Monday with a delegation from the Secretariat of the UN Water Convention in Geneva, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Legislation and Opinion Bureau, the Water Diplomacy Center, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, to discuss ways to enhance international water cooperation.
According to a ministry statement, Secretary-General Jihad Mahamid said the meeting focused on promoting cooperation over shared water resources within the framework of Jordan's proposed accession to the 1992 Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, known as the Helsinki Convention. The discussions reviewed the convention's provisions and examined the benefits and implications of Jordan joining the agreement.
The UN Water Convention, adopted in 1992 and entering into force in 1996, was amended in 2003 to allow any UN member state to join.
The convention aims to ensure the sustainable use of transboundary water resources by facilitating cooperation and improving water management at the national level.
