'No More Delays': Gandapur Calls For Dialogue On Kalabagh Dam
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Monday stressed that the state's interests outweigh politics and highlighted the necessity of the Kalabagh Dam for Pakistan's water security and flood management.
Speaking to the media after a party meeting at KP House in Islamabad, Gandapur said that the absence of major dams has intensified the damage caused by heavy rainfall and floods.“We hesitate to name dams, but Kalabagh Dam is essential for the state. Any concerns regarding it should be addressed through dialogue,” he added.
The Chief Minister affirmed KP's willingness to contribute to the construction of Kalabagh Dam and called on other provinces to participate, stating that collaborative efforts are needed to make the project feasible.
Provincial Efforts on Flood Control
Gandapur acknowledged delays in dam construction that have resulted in significant losses, but noted that the provincial government is now actively building dams independently.“Last year we completed six dams, including the Gomal Zam Dam, which helped reduce flood-related damage. Currently, we are constructing multiple dams across districts to mitigate risks,” he said.
He further detailed ongoing projects, including the Jabba Dam for the protection of Peshawar and a protective wall in Budhni, Peshawar, to safeguard against floods.
Climate and Infrastructure Measures
Addressing recent weather events in Buner, Gandapur explained that cloudbursts, rather than deforestation, are causing localized flash floods. He added that protective nets, inspired by Swiss techniques, will be installed to prevent rocks from being swept away during floods.
“Natural disaster preparedness has been neglected in Pakistan, and we are now taking steps to protect lives and property,” the Chief Minister concluded.
