APEC Countries Pledge Responsible AI Integration in Energy Industry

(MENAFN) At the close of a two-day summit in South Korea, member countries of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) pledged Thursday to pursue the “responsible adoption” of artificial intelligence (AI) within the energy industry.

The meeting, held on August 27-28, tackled pressing energy challenges across the Asia-Pacific region. Officials emphasized leveraging cutting-edge energy storage, advanced power grids, and efficiency-enhancing technologies to address growing electricity demands.

The ministers acknowledged the growing electricity demand across the region and stressed the importance of diversifying power sources, encouraging investment, promoting technological innovation, and enabling efficient market operations to enhance the flexibility, resilience, and stability of power systems.

In addition, the statement stressed modernizing and expanding grid infrastructure, including storage solutions, microgrids, smart distribution networks, and subsea cables, as vital to meeting future energy needs.

APEC delegates also “highlighted the innovative potential of AI in energy systems,” noting its applications in predictive analytics and demand management, while calling for the “responsible adoption of AI” throughout the energy sector.

This summit precedes the upcoming APEC leaders’ summit set for late October in Gyeongju, South Korea, which has taken on the APEC Chair for 2025.

Founded in 1989, APEC is a regional economic forum comprising 21 member economies, including the US, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, and Russia.
