Putin vows to share details of Alaska’s summit with Xi, Modi
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to share details with leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), including China’s Xi Jinping and India’s Narendra Modi, about his recent discussions in Alaska with US President Donald Trump, which centered on resolving the war in Ukraine, according to reports.
Addressing the SCO summit in Tianjin, China, on Monday, Putin expressed gratitude for the initiatives and proposals put forward by Beijing, New Delhi, and other partners seeking an end to the conflict.
He stated that he hoped the progress made in Alaska with the US president “are also moving in this direction, opening the way to peace in Ukraine.”
Putin told attendees that he would “certainly inform colleagues in more detail of the results of the negotiations in Alaska” during private meetings at the summit. He noted that he had already shared some points of the discussions with Xi during a leaders’ banquet.
The Russian leader emphasized that any durable peace deal could only hold if “the root causes of the crisis… [are] eliminated,” stressing that “a fair security balance must be restored.”
He pointed to Western “attempts to drag Ukraine into NATO, which represent a direct threat to Russia’s security” as one of the main drivers of the conflict.
The Russia-US summit took place on August 15 in Anchorage, marking the first face-to-face talks between Putin and Trump since the American leader began his new term earlier this year. The three-hour meeting did not produce a truce or formal agreement, though both sides described it as highly constructive.
Following the talks, Trump shifted his focus from an immediate ceasefire to pursuing a wider peace settlement. He also declared that Ukraine would not be allowed to join NATO and would have to abandon its claim to Crimea, which Russia annexed after a 2014 referendum.
