Xi urges SCO to fight back Western power to have fair system

(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to resist “hegemonism and power politics” and work toward creating a more just international system. He delivered the remarks on Monday while addressing fellow leaders at the group’s summit in Tianjin.

In his keynote speech, Xi highlighted the importance of the “Shanghai spirit,” which he described as “mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diverse civilizations, and pursuit of shared development.”

He praised the progress the SCO has achieved since its establishment in 2001 and outlined new goals for the future. Xi said member states should “oppose the Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation, and bullying practices,” language often used by Beijing to criticize Western approaches.

“We should advocate an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, and make the global governance system more just and equitable,” he added.

Xi urged member countries to deepen cooperation while acknowledging their national differences, enhance people-to-people exchanges, and make the organization more efficient and evidence-driven.

He pointed out that the combined economies of SCO states now total \$30 trillion, reflecting the bloc’s growing global role. Members, he noted, are working together to address challenges ranging from security and environmental issues to technological innovation.

Xi also stressed the importance of trade and investment, noting that China’s cumulative trade volume with SCO partners has exceeded \$2.3 trillion. He highlighted the role of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative and promised further commitments in areas such as education and training for science and engineering to support long-term growth.
