The earthquake, which hit the mountainous Kunar province, caused widespread destruction, flattening homes and buildings. According to Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, over 800 people were confirmed dead and another 2,500 injured in Kunar alone. In neighbouring Nangarhar province, 12 deaths and 255 injuries were reported.

The scale of the disaster has triggered a massive rescue and relief operation. Taliban authorities, supported by international organizations including the United Nations, have deployed teams to deliver emergency medical care, food, and shelter. The UN in Afghanistan said it was“deeply saddened” by the tragedy and confirmed that its teams were already on the ground delivering lifesaving support.
