Putin, Modi Discuss Ukraine at SCO Summit
(MENAFN) Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi conducted high-stakes bilateral discussions Monday during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China's northern port city, with Ukraine conflict resolution dominating their agenda.
The diplomatic encounter unfolded as Modi endorsed "all the efforts to achieve peace" regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Peskov revealed the leaders engaged in an extended 50-minute private dialogue inside the Russian president's Aurus vehicle before transitioning to continued talks at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, serving as Putin's temporary residence throughout the summit proceedings.
"They talked in the car while they were driving, then they continued to talk in the car, and now, before they join the delegation, they are continuing such talks," Peskov stated.
The Indian Prime Minister documented their joint travel on social media platforms, posting: "After the proceedings at the SCO Summit venue, President Putin and I travelled together to the venue of our bilateral meeting. Conversations with him are always insightful."
The diplomatic engagement occurs amid escalating trade tensions, with Washington implementing devastating 50% tariffs on Indian imports while condemning New Delhi for "acting as a global clearinghouse for Russian oil."
New Delhi has forcefully rejected these measures, denouncing the US tariffs as "unfair."
During televised opening statements, Modi emphasized historical ties: "In the most difficult of circumstances, India and Russia have always been shoulder to shoulder."
Addressing the Ukrainian crisis directly, Modi declared: "We have been discussing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. We welcome all the efforts to achieve peace. We hope that all parties will move forward constructively. We will have to find a way to end the conflict as soon as possible and establish peace. This is the call of all humanity."
According to an official statement from the Indian External Affairs Ministry, both leaders explored bilateral cooperation across economic, financial, and energy sectors.
The ministry confirmed Putin and Modi examined regional and global developments, particularly Ukraine-related matters.
Modi "reiterated his support for the recent initiatives that have been taken to address the conflict in Ukraine, and emphasized the need to expedite a cessation of the conflict, and find a durable peace settlement," the statement read.
