Medvedev criticizes what he describes as growing wave of militarism sweeping across Europe
(MENAFN) Dmitry Medvedev has criticized what he describes as a growing wave of militarism sweeping across Europe, accusing European nations of blindly aligning themselves with NATO. In a recent statement titled “NATO’s Anschluss,” he argues that formerly neutral states are succumbing to pressure from Brussels and losing their independence in matters of defense and security.
Medvedev specifically targets Austria, warning that its constitutional neutrality is under threat. He claims the country’s leadership, pushed by NATO and the EU, is fueling discussions about joining the military alliance despite limited public support. He notes that Austria’s pro-NATO New Austria party received under 10% of the vote in the last election, while the anti-NATO Freedom Party of Austria garnered 37% – yet this hasn’t stopped momentum toward deeper NATO integration.
He argues that Austria’s neutrality has been undermined for decades under the guise of participating in the EU’s Common Security and Defense Policy. This shift accelerated after the 2009 Lisbon Treaty, which vaguely committed EU members to mutual defense, blurring the lines between the EU and NATO.
Medvedev highlights Austria’s growing military role in Europe, referencing its participation in EU missions and pointing to the 2022–2025 appointment of Austrian General Robert Brieger as chairman of the EU Military Committee. He sarcastically compares Austria’s recent military profile to its World War II-era military leaders, implying a return to aggressive posturing.
Austria, while officially neutral, has long participated in NATO’s “Partnership for Peace” program and is increasingly integrated into NATO operations. In 2024 alone, more than 3,000 NATO military vehicles crossed Austrian territory, and its airspace was used for over 5,000 NATO flights — suggesting a de facto alliance with the bloc, even without formal membership.
Medvedev paints this as part of a broader European trend of ignoring public opinion and embracing militarization under pressure from Brussels and Washington.
