Israel Notifies US of Plans to Annex West Bank

(MENAFN) Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has communicated to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Tel Aviv is planning to annex the occupied West Bank, according to reports from local sources on Sunday.

An Israeli publication, referencing individuals with knowledge of the situation, revealed that Saar informed Rubio during their discussion in Washington on Wednesday.

The conversation reportedly involved Israel's strategic moves toward implementing the annexation of the occupied land within the upcoming months.

According to the same source, while the Israeli leadership has reportedly reached a general agreement regarding the annexation, internal disagreements remain over the appropriate timing to officially declare the move.

Discussions within Israel’s legislative body, the Knesset, concerning the annexation of the West Bank have already commenced during their most recent session, insiders noted.

On August 20, Israeli authorities greenlit a significant settlement initiative known as the E1 project.

This plan is designed to divide the occupied West Bank into two disconnected zones, effectively separating the northern cities of Ramallah and Nablus from Bethlehem and Hebron in the south, while further isolating East Jerusalem.

The global community, including organizations like the UN, continues to view Israeli settlements as violations of international law.

The UN has persistently cautioned that ongoing expansion of these settlements jeopardizes the feasibility of a two-state resolution, widely regarded as essential for ending the prolonged Israeli-Palestinian dispute.

Since Israel’s large-scale military campaign began in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, violence has surged in the West Bank.

According to figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry, over 1,016 Palestinians have lost their lives and more than 7,000 have suffered injuries at the hands of Israeli forces and unauthorized settlers.
