Putin Addresses Ukraine Conflict at SCO Summit
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin declared on Monday his intention to pursue a “long-term and sustainable” settlement to the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
He restated Moscow’s stance that Western efforts to align Kyiv with NATO were the fundamental trigger of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Speaking during the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin, Putin emphasized that such Western initiatives “are a direct threat to Russian security.”
These remarks reinforce the Kremlin’s consistent narrative that NATO's eastward expansion is a core issue.
Putin further argued that the situation in Ukraine originated “not due to an invasion but due to a coup d’etat in Kyiv,” placing responsibility squarely on Western powers for fomenting unrest.
He insisted, “We must ensure that the Ukrainian crisis is resolved on a long-term and sustainable basis by addressing the root causes of the crisis.”
Reflecting on his recent in-person dialogue with US President Donald Trump during their meeting in Alaska, Putin said they reviewed the summit’s outcome, which he described as an effort at “opening a road to peace in Ukraine.”
He also shared details of these discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Putin noted that Russia will consider peace proposals from both China and India regarding Ukraine.
Additionally, he is expected to engage in a bilateral conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later Monday in Tianjin.
