Tomato Exports Resumed To Saudi Market-Agricultural Minister
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)
Amman, August 31 (Petra) –Ministry of Agriculture announced on Sunday the resumption of tomato exports to Saudi markets, after a short hiatus due to marketing challenges.
Minister of Agriculture Dr. Saeb Khreisat said the ministry worked to find "practical solutions to marketing bottlenecks" during the export suspension, mainly supporting the tomato concentrate industry to absorb surplus production.
The minister said a financial ceiling of up to JD500, 000 was allocated to mitigate effects of the export hiatus and protect farmers from losses.
In a statement, he added that the exports resumption was due to ongoing efforts and coordination with Saudi relevant authorities.
The minister also praised the Saudi side's cooperation and response to the resumption of Jordanian tomato imports, stressing the importance of the Saudi market, which constitutes a "major and permanent" outlet for Jordanian agricultural products.
Khreisat indicated that the ministry is continuing its plans aimed at enhancing flow of Jordanian agricultural exports and expanding base of recipient markets.
The minister noted this effort would contribute to supporting Jordanian farmers and maintaining stability of agricultural production as part of the national food security system and realization of Economic Modernization Vision.
According to official data, tomatoes are among Jordan's top export crops, as approximately 228,000 tonnes are exported annually, representing 86% of Jordanian agricultural exports to Gulf markets, primarily Saudi Arabia.
