EU Calls on U.S. to Reverse Visa Ban on Palestinian Officials
(MENAFN) European Union foreign ministers convened in Copenhagen on Saturday, unanimously calling on the United States to reverse its recent move to block visas for Palestinian representatives.
On Friday, the U.S. Department of State announced it is "denying and revoking visas from members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA) ahead of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly."
The summit also addressed the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, though sharp divisions emerged over the possibility of imposing additional sanctions on Israel.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas indicated at a press briefing that although member states largely recognize the seriousness of the situation, they have yet to agree on specific actions to take.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, chairing the session, noted that a growing number of member countries view stronger pressure as necessary, saying Israel is unlikely to alter its approach otherwise.
Meanwhile, outside the meeting, protesters gathered to urge Denmark and the EU to escalate their response to Gaza's worsening humanitarian emergency.
