Two GB Scouts Martyrs, One Wounded In Terrorist Attack On Karakoram Highway
In a tragic incident on Friday morning, terrorists opened fire on a Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts post along the Karakoram Highway, resulting in the deaths of two personnel and injuries to another. The attack occurred in Diamer District.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts, a federal paramilitary force tasked with protecting internal security and monitoring border areas, is based in the region.
According to SSP Diamer, Abdul Hamid, the assailants attacked the check post near Chilas from a high mountain peak. Three soldiers were hit by bullets, two of whom tragically passed away from their injuries.
The two martyrs have been identified as Naib Subedar Khushdad and Havaldar Ashraf. Lance Naik Sajid Ali, who sustained a bullet wound in his abdomen, is currently in stable condition following treatment.
The check post was manned by nine personnel at the time of the attack. Law enforcement recovered two grenades and ten empty bullet casings from the scene. There were 17 bullet marks on the post, and the attackers managed to escape.
Following the attack, police and security forces rapidly responded, cordoning off the area and conducting a search operation. The injured soldier was taken to the Regional Headquarters Hospital in Chilas, where his condition is no longer critical.
In a statement, Shams- Haq Lone, Interior Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, confirmed that the terrorists had used the cover of darkness to carry out their attack. He added that there had been no advance intelligence warnings regarding the assault. In response, security forces have tightened their presence in the area and expanded the search operation.
Faizullah Faraq, the government spokesperson, stated that Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan had issued orders to locate and apprehend the perpetrators, describing the act as cowardly.
This area has seen previous attacks, including a December 2023 bus shooting that resulted in 10 deaths and 20 injuries. After that incident, a Scouts check post was set up on 2nd December 2023. Additionally, on July 21, a similar attack along the Karakoram Highway led to the martyrdom of an FC soldier.
