Pilot Project Launched To Boost Fishing Livelihoods In Kuttanad

(MENAFN- KNN India) Kochi, Aug 25 (KNN) The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has announced a new pilot project to strengthen the fishing community in Kerala's Kuttanad region.

The initiative was unveiled by Union Minister of State George Kurian during a consultative meeting at the ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in Kochi.

The project aims to revive the local economy by introducing a mix of modern and traditional aquaculture practices. These include integrated fish farming, cage fish farming, the eco-friendly“one fish one paddy” model, and biofloc fish farming.

According to the minister, the primary goal is to create better livelihood opportunities for farmers in the region.

To support this, Fish Farmers Producers Organisations (FFPOs) will be set up, helping farmers work collectively and manage resources efficiently. Training programmes will also be conducted to equip farmers with essential aquaculture skills.

In addition, the project will encourage startups to engage in post-harvest activities such as processing, cleaning, packaging, and fish trade, which will generate employment and enhance the value of local produce.

Recognizing the diverse water systems in Kuttanad, the initiative will have separate plans for freshwater and brackish water farming, covering both Upper and Lower Kuttanad. Research institutions, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and central agencies will provide technical guidance and scientific expertise for smooth implementation.

Minister George Kurian confirmed that a detailed project report will be prepared soon to ensure timely execution. He expressed confidence that the project would deliver long-term economic benefits for the community.

The meeting was also attended by former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Fisheries Development Commissioner Dr. Mohammed Koya, CMFRI Director Dr. Grinson George, Principal Scientist Dr. Imelda Joseph, and representatives from research and government institutions.
