(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Fifteen days have passed since authorities seized 12,000 kilograms of rotten meat from different parts of Kashmir, yet questions continue to mount over the fate of the scandal. Despite the scale of the recovery, no substantial follow-up action has been made public, leaving people angry and anxious about accountability.

The seizures - described by officials as“unfit for human consumption” - were reportedly being transported from outside the Valley to local markets. While the consignment was destroyed, locals allege that the crackdown ends with seizures alone, with no deterrent action against those behind the racket. Questions are also being raised about why such large consignments repeatedly enter Kashmir without strict checks or accountability.

While two individuals have been booked so far, the scandal has dealt a heavy blow to the local food industry.

Restaurant owners reported an 80 per cent drop in sales following the scandal, blaming the lack of visible government enforcement in meat markets.

Locals have also criticised the authorities for withholding lab testing reports.“The authorities are taking their time, but when people start falling sick, only then will they punish the guilty,” said a resident. Another questioned,“Is the government waiting for people to fall sick before sharing the results?”

“Even those selling fresh, genuine products are being punished. The government's silence is ruining us,” a restaurant owner in Lal Chowk said.

Another local expressed concern, saying,“Who is really behind this, the traders, the officials, or the transporters? If the government doesn't come clean, people will only see it as another cover-up.”

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Smita Sethi earlier said that intensified inspections and coordinated enforcement would continue to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Despite the assurances, no timeline has been given for further action. The delay has fuelled public anger and renewed debate over food safety monitoring in the Valley, with many calling for stricter checks on suppliers to prevent similar incidents.
