Texas Governor files lawsuit to oust House Democratic leader
(MENAFN) Texas Governor Greg Abbott filed a lawsuit on Tuesday aiming to remove Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu from office, intensifying tensions over a redistricting plan backed by Republicans.
“Today I took emergency action to begin the removal from office of derelict Democrat Texas House members who refuse to show up for the special session,” Abbott stated on X.
The legal action comes in response to a walkout by more than 50 Democratic legislators, many of whom reportedly traveled to states such as Illinois and New York in an effort to prevent a quorum in the Texas House. Their departure was intended to block a vote on a proposed congressional map expected to add five Republican-leaning districts.
“They have not returned and have not met the quorum requirements,” Abbott said, referring to a deadline he had set earlier.
On Monday, the governor also ordered the Texas Rangers to open an investigation into the lawmakers who left the state, citing possible breaches of Texas law.
Democrats have sharply criticized the redistricting effort, calling it an attempt to secure long-term political dominance. In a defiant statement, they responded: “Come and take it.”
