UN is deeply concerned about Sudan’s rapid escalation of violence
(MENAFN) UN humanitarian agencies have expressed deep concern over the rapidly escalating violence in Sudan, warning of a growing number of civilian casualties and a steep decline in humanitarian conditions, according to recent updates.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) outlined the worsening crisis, noting that fierce clashes continue to rage in North Darfur State.
"Our humanitarian colleagues note that heavy fighting continues in North Darfur State, with multiple reports of civilian casualties in recent days," OCHA said. The agency also reported that violent confrontations broke out on Friday and Saturday in El Fasher, the capital of the state, following prior battles between armed factions. Among the affected areas is the Abu Shouk displacement camp, which currently shelters around 25,000 people.
The situation remains especially dire in Zamzam camp, located on the outskirts of El Fasher. A year after famine was confirmed there, the area is still cut off and under siege, leaving residents on the brink of starvation. According to the office, no food aid has been delivered by road in over 12 months.
