Mass Firings At US State Department As Trump Dismisses Over 1,350 Staff

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) President Trump ordered the dismissal of over 1,350 employees from the U.S. State Department, marking a major shake-up in diplomatic staffing.

The U.S. Department of State has begun dismissing over 1,350 staff members as part of an unprecedented overhaul of its diplomatic institutions. This move marks one of the largest restructurings in recent history aimed at streamlining foreign policy operations.

According to Reuters on Friday, July 11, the cuts affect 1,107 civil service employees and 246 foreign service staff working within the United States. The report cites internal documents and senior officials familiar with the matter.

A senior State Department official stated that the total reduction, including voluntary resignations, is expected to approach 3,000 employees. The restructuring aims to simplify operations and eliminate overlapping or non-essential functions.

An internal memo obtained by Reuters explains that the goal is to enhance focus on core diplomatic priorities by removing redundant positions and restructuring outdated departments. The reform is intended to modernize the department's approach to international affairs.

The restructuring follows an announcement made by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in April. At the time, he criticized the department's structure as“bloated, bureaucratic, and inefficient,” and promised sweeping changes to improve agility and effectiveness.

Among the eliminated positions are roles such as the“Senior Official for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights,” along with offices responsible for monitoring war crimes and global conflicts. These removals reflect a shift in strategic focus.

Critics have raised concerns that the cuts could weaken U.S. oversight on global human rights and conflict monitoring. However, supporters argue the reforms are necessary to ensure that the department remains responsive to current geopolitical challenges.

As the State Department moves forward with its restructuring, the international community will be closely watching how these internal shifts impact America's role in diplomacy, human rights, and global leadership.
