China increases ecological, scientific, tourism potential of geological wonders
(MENAFN) With a helmet on and a headlamp cutting through the darkness, 14-year-old Wang Zichen ventured into the depths of a limestone cave, becoming part of a growing trend of adventure seekers exploring underground landscapes in the mountainous regions of southwest China.
Beneath the steep mountains of Guizhou Province lies a sprawling underground world shaped by water erosion over millions of years. These caves, numbering in the tens of thousands, are home to stunning natural formations, unique wildlife, and historical human traces.
Earlier this year, Guizhou introduced a comprehensive strategy to improve cave management, restore fragile ecosystems, and encourage thoughtful use of these natural spaces. The goal is to increase the ecological, scientific, and tourism potential of these geological wonders. As a result, a variety of cave-centered businesses have emerged, helping to attract visitors and strengthen local economies.
"It is both exciting and informative," said Wang, who, along with his friends, toured the Forest Coolpark site located in Libo Karst during his school break. This area is part of the South China Karst, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While inside, he was captivated by the intricate stalactites and gained insight into how karst landscapes are formed.
According to the manager of the site, a wide selection of cave-related attractions has been created to cater to the varying terrain and visitor interests. These include adventure caving, guided tours, overnight camping inside caves, and even hotpot meals served underground. Since the recent May Day holiday, nearly 10,000 tourists have visited the area, generating revenue exceeding 7 million yuan, or about 978,542 U.S. dollars.
"We follow an ecology-first principle in our development," the manager stated. "We preserve the caves' natural features while designing tour routes, and avoid any construction in deeper sections. All waste is strictly managed and removed from the caves daily."
