Trump Confirms Approval of Surprise Attacks on Iran
(MENAFN) Leader Donald Trump gave the go-ahead for a military assault on Iran just hours before American bombers and submarines hit pivotal nuclear installations, US media reported Sunday.
The move, which followed weeks of detailed preparation, represented a sharp U-turn from Trump’s earlier public remark suggesting Tehran would have up to a fortnight to comply with US demands, a news outlet explained.
“The goal was to create a situation when everyone wasn’t expecting it,” a senior US official told the outlet.
Soon after the directive, B-2 stealth aircraft departed Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and released six 30,000-pound bunker-buster munitions on the underground Fordow enrichment complex.
Concurrently, US Navy submarines unleashed more than two dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles at facilities in Isfahan and Natanz.
In a televised address hours later, Trump praised the operation as “a spectacular military success,” insisting Iran’s main nuclear sites were “completely and totally obliterated.”
Tehran has disputed the extent of the destruction. Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization issued a statement pledging to press ahead with its nuclear program, describing the enterprise as “built on the blood of nuclear martyrs.”
