Not security-relatedWhile the British maritime security firm Ambrey didn't provide any details about the incident, it earlier said that the cause of the incident which happened near the Strait of Hormuz was not security-related.
The event unfolded as tensions escalated between Israel and Iran, with both nations exchanging attacks for a fifth consecutive day following Israel's widescale strikes on Friday aimed at preventing Tehran from building an atomic weapon.
The Strait of Hormuz lies between Oman and Iran and links the Gulf north of it with the Gulf of Oman to the south and the Arabian Sea beyond.
About a fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes through the strait. Between the start of 2022 and last month, roughly 17.8 million to 20.8 million barrels of crude, condensate and fuels flowed through the strait daily, according to data from Vortexa.
Shipping company Frontline FRO later in the day said its oil tanker Front Eagle was involved in a collision near the Strait of Hormuz, describing the event as a navigational incident unrelated to the ongoing regional conflict.
Recent emergency responsesThis rescue operation comes on the heels of a recent emergency response by the National Guard. On June 4, they conducted a successful medical evacuation of a crew member aboard a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker in UAE territorial waters. The injured man, in his fifties, required immediate medical care, and was airlifted to a UAE hospital for treatment.
Earlier, on May 18, the National Guard also carried out a heroic rescue of 13 individuals from a sinking picnic boat off the UAE coast. The operation was launched swiftly after the distress call was received, with both citizens and residents onboard.
