UK auto industry denounces U.S. tariff plan, urges swift trade agreement
(MENAFN) A leading British automotive trade association has expressed its disappointment regarding the United States' plan to levy new tariffs on imported vehicles.
Mike Hawes, head executive officer of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), released a statement Wednesday night, saying the announcement "is not surprising but, nevertheless, disappointing if, as seems likely, additional tariffs are to apply to UK-made cars."
His comments followed U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order to levy 25 percent tariffs on auto imports, scheduled to take effect on April 2.
Hawes emphasized the established and mutually beneficial ties between the U.S. and British auto industries, and urged both sides to "come together immediately and strike a deal that works for all."
He further stated, "Rather than imposing additional tariffs, we should explore ways in which opportunities for both British and American manufacturers can be created as part of a mutually beneficial relationship, benefitting consumers and creating jobs and growth across the Atlantic."
