Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso Withdraw From OIF

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS, March 19 (KUNA) -- Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso announced on Wednesday their withdrawal from the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), accusing the organization of becoming a "remotely controlled Political tool".
A joint statement issued by the foreign ministers of the three countries said that the OIF has engaged in selective implementation of sanctions based on geopolitical considerations and has undermined their sovereignty.
The three heads of state, loyal to the aspirations of their peoples and keen to defend their legitimate interests, have decided to leave the OIF, the statement added.
The three countries also left the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) late January 2024 to form their own Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Mali declared in a separate statement that it cannot remain a member of an organization whose actions are contrary to constitutional principles based on state sovereignty.
Niger also announced its decision to withdraw from the OIF in a brief statement addressed to diplomatic missions signed by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Laouali Labo.
Burkina Faso has not issued a statement regarding its withdrawal, but an OIF spokesperson commented on the matter, saying that the country has taken a similar decision to follow the step announced by Niger.
The Paris-based OIF has 93 member states and governments, and its goals include promoting the French language and cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as addresses issues of peace, democracy, human rights, and education. (end)
