Mark Carney Wins Canada's Liberal Party's Leadership, Becomes New PM


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, March 10 (KUNA) -- The former governor of the Canadian central bank Mark Carney won the liberal Party's leadership, becoming the new Prime Minister of Canada, official statistics showed.
According to the statistics, Carney beat former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on Sunday evening election by 85.9 percent of the votes during the process, which saw the participation of 150,000 members of the governing party.
Carney now succeeds former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the country's most coveted position.
During his victory, Carney vowed to win the trade war with the United States, saying that the counter Tariffs against the US imports would remain in place "until the Americans show us respect".
He also asserted that he would protect the Canada's borders.
Former PM Trudeau announced his resignation back in January after a decade in power. (end)
