South Korea warns of 'geopolitical risks,' seeks closer relations with Japan

(MENAFN) On Saturday, acting President of South Korea Choi Sang-mok emphasized the escalating "geopolitical risks" worldwide and expressed optimism for a renewed partnership with Japan.

Speaking at an event commemorating the 106th anniversary of the March 1 Independence Movement, which opposed Japanese colonial rule, Choi noted that "geopolitical risks are intensifying worldwide, economic and trade uncertainties are growing, and international relations are rapidly shifting," as stated by a Seoul-based news agency.

Representing impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, Choi stressed that to "effectively respond" to the "grave international situation," stronger ties between Tokyo and Seoul are "essential."

He further acknowledged the increasing "shadows of conflict and division" in South Korea, a remark that seemingly allude to the ongoing political turmoil and mass protests splitting Yoon's supporters and opponents.

Yoon was impeached by the National Assembly on December 14 last year after a decisive vote forced him out of office following his controversial martial law order on December 3.
