Moscow claims Kiev planning to drag NATO into conflict

(MENAFN) The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has claimed that Ukrainian special services, with Western support, are planning provocations to implicate Moscow and draw NATO into a direct military confrontation. In a statement on Tuesday, the SVR alleged that Kiev intends to use Russian-made naval mines to orchestrate an explosion involving a foreign vessel in the Baltic Sea. The objective, according to the SVR, is to blame Russia and prompt NATO to restrict Moscow’s access to the Baltic Sea under the guise of ensuring maritime security.

NATO has been increasing its military presence in Eastern Europe, citing concerns over Russia, and recently announced plans to expand its role in the Baltic. Moscow has expressed its determination to protect its interests in the region, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Baltic Sea for its naval operations and energy exports.

Russia has maintained that it has no intention of attacking NATO member states but criticized NATO’s military buildups along its borders, warning that any direct confrontation could escalate into a nuclear conflict. The SVR also accused Ukraine of planning attacks on Russian opposition figures abroad, with the involvement of foreign operatives.

Ukraine has dismissed the Russian claims as propaganda, while the SVR suggested that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky may resort to provocations to preserve his power and hinder peace negotiations. Despite his term expiring in May 2024, Zelensky remains in office, citing martial law and postponing elections. Moscow has also expressed interest in peace talks but insisted that negotiations with the current Ukrainian leadership would be meaningless.
