Trump Threatens Tariffs on European Union Amid Ongoing Trade Disputes

(MENAFN) Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has declared his intention to impose new tariffs on the European Union, accusing them of unfair trade practices. This follows the recent imposition of 25 percent duties on imports from Mexico and Canada, as well as 10% tariffs on Chinese goods, which took effect on February 1.

The European Union had been anticipating possible trade restrictions under the trump administration for months. The president has repeatedly warned that tariffs would be placed on the EU unless certain conditions were fulfilled. In December, Trump demanded that the EU address the trade deficit by substantially increasing imports of American oil and gas.

“Am I going to impose tariffs on the European Union? You want the truthful answer, or should I give you a political answer? Absolutely, absolutely,” Trump stated during a press conference at the White House on Friday.

“The European Union has treated us so terribly,” he added. While he confirmed that a "substantial" measure would be taken against the EU, he refrained from specifying the products or exact tariff rates that would be impacted.
