DOHA: Qatar is poised for remarkable growth in the electric vehicle (EV) by hosting numerous events such as the recently concluded Downtown Tech event in Barahat Msheireb.

An official noted that these exhibitions are paramount to accelerate EV sales in the country as investments across innovations and infrastructures strengthen the EV market.

In an interview with The Peninsula, Hamad Alyafei, a Member of Tesla Owners in Qatar and Founder of EV Care said“Most people in Qatar, especially locals like cars which can go off-road. Therefore we need to invest in more EVs, which perform better than other vehicles, while attaining sustainable goals.”

Alyafei, owner of a cyber truck exhibited its features and innovations at Downtown Tech showcasing the firm EV Care which exercises and modifies EVs and integrates AI.

The market expert said“AI is operational in the vehicle as some people want to auto steering and I can help them with that. Some cars and brands have a center lane and by using AI, it becomes more intelligent. So there is my booth there in EV Care we exhibit the mechanics of self-driving cars.

He also displayed a mini cafe behind the EV cyber truck which was launched as part of sustainability and environment-friendly methods to reduce fuel while driving or having to halt for a drink.

The industry leader stressed that electric vehicles are still new and yet to adapt in Qatar as individuals have growing concerns about their durability and charging requirements.

“It's like charging a mobile phone while you are asleep and takes less time. You don't have to stop at a petrol station to fuel up and it has a lot less maintenance than normal cars. You don't need to change the oil or anything except maybe tires and brakes,” Alyafei added.

Qatar aims for EV sales to reach 10 percent of domestic sales by 2030 and is partnering with EV-related firms to attain this goal.

Analysts at Fitch Solutions earlier predicted that Qatar's total EV fleet will reach about 80,000 units by 2032 representing 3.1 percent of the total vehicles registered in the country.

Market researchers observed that the development of the regional EV supply chain in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, as well as the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, will help drive long-term passenger EV adoption in the market.

This progress will enhance the production of locally made EVs, and it's likely that GCC governments will collaborate to jointly advance the regional supply chain.

Meanwhile, the goal of achieving 100 percent electrified public transport buses by 2030 will continue to fuel significant growth in commercial EV sales in the country. According to reports, commercial EV sales rose by 40.5 percent in 2023, reaching approximately 1,080 units. This outlook is reinforced by the anticipated delayed deliveries of FIFA electric buses and Qatar's ongoing efforts in economic diversification.
