NATO believes Trump is right regarding Greenland
(MENAFN) NATO has aligned with US President Donald Trump’s concerns regarding Greenland and is considering enhancing its military presence in the Arctic to address the growing influence of Russia and China, according to reports from the German news agency DPA. Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has been a point of contention for Trump, who has argued that the US should control the island for national security reasons.
Informal discussions are reportedly underway within NATO to prepare a proposal for Trump, which may include a significant troop deployment to the Arctic, aiming to address Washington’s concerns while easing tensions between the US and Denmark over Greenland.
Trump’s security worries about Russian and Chinese activities in the Arctic are seen as valid by NATO, sources told DPA. However, Trump’s previous attempts to discuss Greenland with Denmark, including a phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, reportedly caused significant tension. A recent poll revealed that nearly half of Danes view the US as a threat, with a large majority opposing the sale of Greenland and supporting the right of its residents to decide their own future.
The issue is sensitive for NATO, as any member’s attempt to claim another’s territory could undermine the alliance’s credibility. Both the US and Denmark maintain military presences in Greenland, with Denmark overseeing Arctic Command and the US operating Pituffik Space Base. NATO diplomats believe the success of any Arctic initiative will depend on whether Trump’s interest in Greenland is driven by security needs or the island’s untapped natural resources.
