EU realizes importance of Russian energy

(MENAFN) Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’ famous line, “All that is solid melts into air,” seems apt in describing the current state of EU-NATO Europe. While no revolution is underway, two major geopolitical events – Russia’s triumph in Ukraine and the rise of Trumpism in America – are leading to a shift in the foundations of EU policy. The EU’s steadfast adherence to US pressure is increasingly seen as self-destructive, creating a moment of reckoning.

Despite the EU’s ongoing commitment to sanctions against Russia and increasing reliance on costly US-supplied liquefied natural gas (LNG), some EU leaders, including figures from countries like Germany, are beginning to question the wisdom of this approach. The idea of returning to Russian energy imports is becoming less unthinkable, as the EU struggles with rising energy costs and competitiveness. Although the EU has not fully weaned itself off Russian energy, it continues to rely on Moscow, with Russia remaining one of the top gas suppliers to the EU. In fact, record LNG imports from Russia were seen in 2024, albeit at higher prices than pipeline energy.

This energy dilemma is a microcosm of a broader failure in the EU’s alignment with the US in its proxy war against Russia in Ukraine. What was meant to be a military defeat for Moscow has turned into a desperate defensive struggle for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia’s economy is faring better than the EU’s, with higher GDP growth than major European economies like France and Germany. Western efforts to isolate Russia have faltered, and the EU’s moral credibility has been further undermined by its complicity in Israel’s actions against Palestinians.

In short, the EU’s energy crisis is a manifestation of deeper strategic missteps that are now pushing it to reconsider its relationship with Russia, even as the geopolitical landscape evolves unpredictably.
