Ukraine reports 14 deaths from Russian missile strike in Poltava

(MENAFN) On Sunday, Ukraine confirmed that at least 14 people were killed in a Russian missile strike on the city of Poltava a day earlier. The Poltava Regional Military Administration stated that the death toll had risen to 14, including two children, with one individual dying later in the hospital. Additionally, the attack left 17 people injured, including four children, and 22 others were rescued from the strike zone.

Initially, the authorities reported 12 fatalities from the attack, with search and rescue operations continuing in the area. The strike caused significant damage, affecting 18 residential buildings and several kindergartens. In response to the tragedy, the region declared three days of national mourning, lasting until February 4.

On Saturday, Ukraine’s Air Force announced that Russia launched over 40 missiles toward the country, although it did not specify how many were intercepted by air defenses. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged continued international support for Ukraine, emphasizing that every air defense system and interceptor missile was vital for saving lives and called on allies to increase pressure on Russia.

Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed responsibility for a successful overnight strike targeting Ukraine's gas and energy infrastructure, which supports the country's military-industrial complex.
