Thousands protest in Los Angeles against Trump's immigration policies
(MENAFN) On Sunday, thousands of demonstrators gathered in Los Angeles to voice their opposition to the trump administration's policies on irregular migration, including deportation operations and tighter border regulations. The protest, which took place at the historic Mexican marketplace, saw participants marching onto the 101 Freeway, briefly halting traffic in the area. protesters chanted against President Donald Trump and displayed signs with messages criticizing his immigration measures.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) issued warnings of road closures, informing the public via social media that the protest had not been authorized. Los Angeles, a city with a significant immigrant population, is home to approximately 3.6 million migrants, with 79 percent originating from Mexico and Central America. The city has long been a focal point for debates around immigration policy.
The demonstration comes at a time of rising tensions following President Trump’s recent immigration policy announcements. On January 20, Trump revealed the termination of the CBP One app, which previously allowed migrants to apply for legal entry into the United States. Additionally, on January 22, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was granted expanded authority to arrest irregular migrants near sensitive locations such as churches, hospitals, and schools.
Trump has also celebrated the passing of the Laken Riley Act, which gives border agents the ability to detain migrants involved in criminal activity without a court order. Furthermore, preparations have begun for a facility at Guantanamo Bay that would have the capacity to hold up to 30,000 migrants, intensifying concerns about the administration’s approach to immigration enforcement.
