Greek Prime Minister convenes emergency meeting

(MENAFN) Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held an emergency meeting on Sunday evening in response to increased seismic activity in the Aegean Islands region. The meeting brought together government officials and specialists to discuss the recent earthquakes and assess potential precautions for a larger seismic event. This gathering aimed to ensure that the authorities were prepared for any developments and could act quickly in case of a major earthquake.

The Athens Institute of Geodynamics reported that more than 380 minor tremors have been detected in the region since January 24. These earthquakes varied in magnitude, ranging from a very small 1.3 to a more substantial 4.8. The surge in seismic activity raised concerns about the possibility of a stronger quake in the near future. Despite the unsettling frequency of these tremors, officials reassured the public that the actions being taken were purely precautionary.

Vasilis Kikilias, the Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, reassured citizens that the authorities were following safety protocols. He emphasized the importance of complying with the precautionary measures and adhering to the restrictions that had been implemented. His statement sought to maintain public order and ensure that everyone was well-informed about the steps being taken to mitigate any potential risks.

In response to the growing tremors, authorities on Amorgos Island decided to suspend school activities, affecting kindergartens, as well as primary and secondary schools. Cultural events were also called off, and residents were advised to avoid crowded, enclosed spaces. Meanwhile, on Santorini Island, emergency teams were deployed, including drones, rescue dogs, and search teams, to prepare for any potential damage. Additionally, temporary shelters were set up for emergency workers, and pools were emptied to prevent possible harm to buildings in the event of a strong earthquake.
