Arab League Calls For AI Regulation Framework

CAIRO, Feb 2 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abu Al-Gheit has urged scholars, on Sunday, to draft a regulatory framework for Artificial Intelligence (AI) that aligns with Arab values and interests.
Speaking at the opening session of the Arab Dialogue Circle on Artificial Intelligence in the Arab World, tackling innovative applications and ethical challenges, held at the League's headquarters in Cairo, Abu al-Gheit emphasized the importance of leveraging AI responsibly to serve regional priorities.
He noted the rapid developments in AI, particularly in Large Language Models and generative AI, describing the field as a technological competition among global powers to develop more efficient and cost-effective AI systems.
He cited the recent emergence of a Chinese AI application that caused significant disruptions in global markets and major tech companies.
He said that this competition would only intensify in the coming years, as no country can afford to lag in this field, especially given its direct military implications.
While acknowledging the ethical risks of unregulated AI, he stressed that the technology also presents unprecedented opportunities for growth and human advancement, and that finding the right balance between the advantages and the disadvantages was one of the most pressing questions of our time.
The Arab League's chief underscored that AI is not merely a technological tool but a paradigm shift in thinking and problem-solving, calling for its responsible and ethical use across all sectors to ensure sustainable progress.
Echoing this sentiment, Arab Parliament Speaker Mohammad Ahmad Al-Yamahi emphasized that AI offers numerous advantages in innovation, economic efficiency, and productivity, however, he also pointed out the ethical dilemmas and concerns regarding privacy, cultural identity, and societal security.
He stressed the need for Arab nations to localize AI industries, invest in strategic planning and financial resources, and actively participate in the global AI race to ensure safe and culturally aligned AI integration.
President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport, Dr. Ismail Abdulghafar called for stronger Arab and international cooperation in AI through research networks, specialized centers, and ethical and legislative frameworks, stressing these measures would safeguard cultural values and privacy while mitigating AI-related risks.
The two-day forum is part of the implementation of the Higher Coordination Committee's decision, chaired by the Arab League Secretary-General in April 2024, to advance AI governance and ethical standards in the Arab world. (end)
