DeepSeek gets banned in Italy

(MENAFN) Italy has become the first nation to block the Chinese AI model DeepSeek, following a decision by the country’s data protection authority, Garante, on Thursday. The ban was implemented due to concerns about how DeepSeek handles personal data.

DeepSeek, developed by the Chinese startup DeepSeek Inc., gained popularity quickly, surpassing OpenAI's ChatGPT on the Apple App Store. The move to block the app came after a complaint was filed by the consumer rights group Euroconsumers, prompting the Italian watchdog to seek detailed information on how the app collects, stores, and uses personal data, particularly with regard to its storage in China.

DeepSeek’s initial response to the request was deemed insufficient by Garante, leading to the immediate ban. The authority stated that the data of millions of Italians could be at risk. Following Italy's actions, other privacy regulators, including those in Ireland and South Korea, have initiated similar inquiries into the app's data practices.

The US Navy has already warned its personnel against using DeepSeek due to security and ethical concerns, further highlighting the growing international scrutiny around the app’s data privacy practices.
