Explosion shakes EU manufacturer of artillery shells for Ukraine

(MENAFN) A blast at an ammunition factory in southeastern Spain on Thursday injured six workers, one critically. The explosion occurred at Expal Munitions' facility in Javali Viejo, Murcia, a subsidiary of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, which is a key supplier of weapons to Ukraine. Emergency services reported that the workers, aged 30 to 52, suffered burns and smoke inhalation, with one worker sustaining a traumatic brain injury.

Expal Munitions, recently acquired by Rheinmetall in 2023, manufactures various munitions, including artillery shells for Ukraine. Despite operating multiple facilities across Spain, it’s unclear which specific plants are involved in the production of munitions sent to Ukraine. In December 2023, Rheinmetall received a €142 million order for 155mm shells, to be delivered in 2025, with the production expected to occur at its Spanish plants.

Rheinmetall, which has seen significant profit increases amid the Ukraine conflict, also produces tanks and air defense systems for Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly criticized Western arms support to Kiev, warning that such aid will only prolong the war.
