Slovakia detains Ukrainian due to supposed coup plan
(MENAFN) Slovak authorities have arrested a Ukrainian national on charges related to a coup threat, local media reported Thursday. The unnamed man is set to be expelled from Slovakia and returned to Ukraine. This arrest follows accusations from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has been vocal in his opposition to NATO and EU policies regarding the Ukraine conflict. Fico has also claimed that recent anti-government protests in Slovakia were linked to Ukrainian interference.
Last week, up to 100,000 people protested against Fico’s policies, citing his perceived alignment with Russia. Slovak Police confirmed the arrest of the Ukrainian national and stated that the individual would be placed on the country’s blacklist. Meanwhile, Erik Kalinak, an advisor to Fico, suggested that the protests could be connected to the Georgian Legion, a foreign military unit fighting for Ukraine, though the Legion has denied these claims.
The tensions have been escalating, especially after Ukraine stopped the flow of Russian gas to Slovakia. Fico has previously criticized Ukrainian President Zelensky and accused him of causing problems for Slovakia. Additionally, Fico alleged that Slovakia’s opposition was planning a coup similar to the 2014 Maidan uprising in Ukraine, with foreign operatives in the country allegedly involved.
