Norwegian football team to donate game revenues over Maccabi Tel Aviv to Gaza
(MENAFN) Bodo/Glimt, a Norwegian football club, announced that it would donate all ticket revenues from their January 23 UEFA Europa League match against Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv to humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza. In a statement released on Saturday, the club expressed its deep concern for the ongoing suffering and violations of international law occurring around the world. The club made it clear that they could not remain indifferent to the situation, pledging to contribute to a cause that aligns with their values of solidarity and compassion.
The donation, totaling NOK 735,000 (approximately USD65,000), was raised through ticket sales for the home match against Maccabi Tel Aviv. The funds will be allocated to the Red Cross for humanitarian aid specifically in the Gaza Strip, helping to support those in dire need in the region. This generous contribution is seen as a collective effort from the entire Bodo/Glimt community, reflecting a shared commitment to assisting people affected by the crisis.
In the match itself, Bodo/Glimt emerged victorious, defeating Maccabi Tel Aviv 3-1. As a result, the club secured ninth place in the standings, earning 14 points in total. The win also served as a moment of celebration for the club, though the focus remained on the significant humanitarian gesture made in support of Gaza.
Norway has been notably vocal in its support for Palestinian statehood. Along with Spain and Ireland, Norway officially recognized Palestine as a state in May 2024 and was one of the first Western countries to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been engaged in a military operation that has resulted in more than 47,000 Palestinian casualties. Following intense mediation efforts by Qatar, the US, and Egypt, a truce was brokered on January 19, 2025.
