Geneva: The World health Organization (WHO) on Friday called for resuming urgent medical evacuation from Gaza, noting that some 15,000 injured people need treatment outside the Strip.
WHO representative for occupied Palestinian territories, Rik Peeperkorn explained in remarks that the health needs in the Gaza Strip are enormous, and that only 18 hospitals out of 36 are partially operating, in addition to 11 field hospitals, noting that the ceasefire allowed sufficient health supplies to reach about 1.6 million people.
He stated that the organization plans to add 200 beds to Al-Shifa hospital, while assessing the restoration of the Indonesian hospital, and installing a prefabricated health facility in Gaza City. The WHO has deployed surgical teams to Al-Ahli Arab hospital.
During the 15-month war on Gaza, the Israeli occupation forces deliberately destroyed the health system in Gaza and targeted medical and paramedical staff, as well as the crews supporting relief operations and civil defense.
